How It All Began
Helmet Head opened on February 2, 2002. My husband Wayne said it’s good luck to have a lot of even numbers in your opening date.
When I started in the hair business, I worked at a “fancy” downtown shop, and I HATED
IT! When I couldn’t sleep, I would stay awake and dream up what my ideal place would be like. Having a Harley Davidson motorcycle, I wanted to bring some of the fun and freedom I felt while riding into my workplace, hence, Helmet Head.
We started out in a little brown building on Corson Avenue in Georgetown, with about 700 square feet of space and a cat that came with the building–big shout out to Ozzie! Thanks to a great client base from my old salon and the good people from the Georgetown, Beacon Hill, South Park and West Seattle areas, we thrived for six years in that little spot.
One day, I got a call from the nice folks that had owned Signet Press. They had sold their business, but kept the building, and wanted to know if we’d be interested in moving to a bigger spot. So on April 15th 2008, we opened in our present location on Airport Way. With the new space, we are able to offer massage, make up, skin care, and a larger variety of retail products.
I wanted to create a place that is welcoming and comfortable, and different from other salons. We’re not for everybody, but that’s the point. If you want great service without a side order of bullshit, then this is the place for you.
Our Team
Sammy – Owner/Hair Stylist
Sammy has owned the shop for 10 years, and has been doing hair for 15 years. She enjoys performing cuts, colors, foils, and special occasion hair, from classic to more current stuff. She also loves doing makeup, and would love to give you a consultation about our fabulous Emani make up products to go with your ‘do.
Lorena – Stylist
Lorena Mendoza is a great stylist with many years of experience, including being an instructor for eight years, so you know she’s seen it all. She does great color, cuts, foils, perms, and has a very nice laid back, easy-going way with the clients. She’s great at listening to what your needs are, and giving you a style that works with your life.
Heather – Stylist
Heather Kraft is ready to make your day! She’s skilled in cutting and color, and is especially good at men’s hair cuts. She’ll get you looking good in no time, and keep you looking sharp. We enjoy her great energy, and think you will too!
Anastacia – Assistant/Stylist
Anastacia Rix is our newest member of the group. She’s helping the girls and soaking up all the knowledge she can, while receiving further education from our lovely Miss Lorena. If you would like to be a model for Anastacia, please call our shop and get scheduled. It’s a great way to get services for next to nothing ($10 for a hair cut, $20 for all over color), and to help advance the education of a new artist. Anastacia is also great at special occasion hair and up-do’s! If you’re looking forward to having a night out, she is great to see for a special look that will keep up with you all night.
Jenny – Massage Therapist
Jenny Ancich is a wonderful massage therapist. She works wonders with her hands, hot stones, chinese fire cups, shoot, she could probably even use her feet. (But we promise she doesn’t!) She also has experience with prenatal massage, and can expertly rub your pain away. She is available Monday through Wednesday from 2-7.
Grace
Grace Fong is the voice and face of Helmet Head while she attends college, and we love having her here. If you get someone who is a cotton headed ninny muggins on the phone in the evening, it’s probably Sammy answering the phone. Please bear with her, she’s a bit of a savant!
